The Archdiocese of Lomé ( Latin Archidioecesis Lomensis ) is an archbishopric in Togo and the seat of the metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of Togo in the capital Lomé . The archbishopric covers 3,682 km² and 1.8 million inhabitants, of which about 29% are Roman Catholic.

history

The Archdiocese of Lomé was spun off as Apostolic Prefecture on April 12, 1892 from the Apostolic Prefecture of Dahomey (today's Benin ), established in 1883 . The first Apostolic Prefect was Hermann Bücking SVD in 1896 . On March 16, 1914, the prefecture was elevated to the status of an Apostolic Vicariate , the first Apostolic Vicar was Franz Wolf . After the separation of the Apostolic Prefecture of Sokodé on May 18, 1937, the Apostolic Vicariate of Togo was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Lomé on June 14, 1938. On September 14, 1955 the elevation to the archbishopric took place. The dioceses of Atakpamé (1964) and Aného and Kpalimé (both 1994) were spun off from the archbishopric.
