Camaguey Cathedral

The Cathedral of Camagüey or Cathedral of Our Lady of Candelaria ( Spanish Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria ) is a Roman Catholic church in Camagüey , Cuba . The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Camagüey is consecrated with the patronage of the Virgin of Candelaria to the Mother of God , who is also the patron saint of the city, and also has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The building was consecrated in 1748, a previous building is said to date from the 16th century. In 1912 the church was elevated to a cathedral with the creation of the diocese. In the context of the visit of Pope John Paul II in January 1998, renovations of the cathedral were carried out with the help of donations, which is today in a very good condition. In the same year the church became a metropolitan seat. The cathedral is part of the historic center of Camagüey, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 . In January 2014, Pope Francis also awarded the Metropolitan Church the title of a minor basilica on the 500th anniversary of the city's foundation .

Building

The three-aisled church on the southeast corner of Parque Ignacio Agramonte was built in the Cuban Baroque style, but was rebuilt several times. The current appearance of the cathedral is the result of the renovations in 1864, from which the finely crafted wooden ceiling and the original floor originate. Instead of side altars there are niches in the masonry in which the figures of saints stand. The most striking feature is the six-story bell tower, which is topped with a statue of Christ.
