The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary is a church building of the Roman Catholic Church in the city of Chittagong in Bangladesh . It serves the Archdiocese of Chittagong as the episcopal church .

The cathedral is located in the city center of Chittagong in Thana Kotwali about one kilometer east of Chittagong train station. To the north of the cathedral is a cemetery measuring approximately 37 × 50 meters. In the same street block as the cathedral is St. Placid's School and College, in the street to the east of it is St. Scholastica's Girls' School & College, both of which are Catholic schools.

history

The first churches in Cittagong were built by the Portuguese in 1600. The current church building of Our Lady of the Rosary was built in 1843. On May 25, 1927, the Chittagong Diocese was established and the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary became a cathedral . The care of the diocese was entrusted to the Canadian province of the Congregation of the Holy Cross .

The nave of the church is about 40 meters long and 10 meters wide. Open colonnades with pent roofs, from which doors lead into the church interior, extend along the north and south sides of the nave. There are round windows above the pent roof. In the east of the nave is a square tower in the middle, the slender octagonal tower with a pointed helmet and a surrounding balcony reminiscent of a minaret .

Inside the cathedral is a single-nave aisle church . The lighting comes from the round windows on the side walls.

In addition to its function as a bishop's church, the cathedral also serves as a parish church . The parish of Our Lady of the Rosary has around 5000 Catholics.
