Sosnowiec Cathedral
The Cathedral of Sosnowiec , also Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption ( Polish: Bazylika katedralna Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Sosnowcu ), is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Sosnowiec in the Silesian Voivodeship , Poland . The cathedral of the Sosnowiec diocese dates from the end of the 19th century and has the title of a minor basilica .
history
The most important Catholic church in Sosnowiec was built between 1893 and 1899. In 1896 the lower chapel was taken into use for the faithful. In 1899 the bishop of Kielce , Tomasz Kulinski, established a new parish, which was separated from the parish of Czeladź. The historicist church was completed in 1899 based on the plan of a three-aisled basilica on the plan of a Latin cross. In 1901 the rectory was put into use.
On March 25, 1992 Pope John Paul II founded the Sosnowiec diocese and elevated the church to a cathedral. During his apostolic journey, the Pope visited Sosnowiec and on June 14, 1999 also awarded the cathedral the title of minor basilica. It was declared a cultural monument in 1994 . In October 2014, the roof structure was destroyed by fire and many ceiling paintings were destroyed.
