Kathleen Sheldon

Kathleen E. Sheldon (born June 6, 1952 ) is an American independent historian who is a research partner at the Center for the Study of Women at UCLA . She mainly writes about black African women and Mozambique.

Life

Sheldon received her MA in African Area Studies in 1977 and her PhD in History from the University of California in 1988 .

Sheldon's recent articles on the history of Mozambique and the history of African women have been published in the Canadian Journal of African Studies, History in Africa, African and Asian Studies, and African Studies Review, as well as in collections such as Writing African History, African Novels in the Classroom, and Contesting Archives. She has published over forty book reviews in a variety of journals.

She has served on editorial boards and has contributed to several reference books, including the New Encyclopedia of Africa, Dictionary of African Biography, and Oxford Bibliographies in African Studies. She was co-editor of two special editions of journals on women and gender, Lusotopia (2005) and African Studies Review (in two parts, 2015 and 2016). She is also the editor of H-Luso-Africa, an online network on Portuguese-speaking Africa.

She was elected to the board of the Association for African Studies (2004-2007), is currently treasurer of the ASA (from 2013) and has also served in leadership positions on the ASA Women's Committee and the Organization for African Studies of Lusophonie.
