Catholic Church of Vlora

The Catholic Church of Vlora ( Albanian  Kisha Katolike Shën Luigji Gonzaga e Shën Maria ) is subordinate to the double patronage of Saints Aloisius of Gonzaga and Mary , the Mother of the Lord and the bishopric of the Albanian Greek Catholic Church .

Different figures are available for the year the church was built. The Albanian Institute for Cultural Monuments mentions in a publication that the church was built around 1800, other sources simply speak of the 19th century. Such a building is unlikely for the Ottoman Empire at that time and is nowhere mentioned; In addition, the first Catholic parish in the Tuscan southern Albania, with its mostly Muslim and Orthodox residents, is said not to have emerged until 1895. In this respect, a creation at the beginning of the 1920s is more likely, especially because from this point in time the first image documents also appear. In any case, it is the only surviving older Catholic church building in the area of the Apostolic Administration of Southern Albania .

The church building was built by Italian architects. It is built in the neoclassical style with capitals , frames and arches in the simplified Roman style . The single-nave church is covered with two sloping ceilings and has a suspended ceiling. Part of the altar is clearly accentuated by pilaster exits from the side walls. At the entrance there are two pilasters and gates that form an anteroom to the nave.

After Albania was proclaimed the first atheist state in the world in 1967, the building served as a municipal puppet theater until 1990 . After 1990 the church was returned to its original purpose and rededicated in 1993. The church has been protected as a cultural monument since 2006 .
