Her focus is on the seemingly ordinary, but her emphatically neutral gaze leads into a fictional world. In a cross-material and cross-media transfer process, situations such as For example, you can watch the waiting on the red carpet at the Berlinale with a photo or video camera , put it together into an image and present it as a light box or photograph. With this experimental streak in her art, she places the actual photographic motif on the sidelines of recognizability and creates an illusion of movement and expanded scenery.

Katrin Korfmann tries to create “ déjà-vu ” moments, whether in transit rooms or specially created installations. If you succeed in this, the recordings will be framed. Details are possibly left out in order to be able to manipulate emerging information. Her work is based on concepts from photography , whereby she deals with the question of “posing” and “acting” in public space. In her recordings, she captures random situations whose uncontrollability leads to surprises. The artist chooses the concept, but not the ultimate protagonists of her work.

Korfmann's works may be viewed as stage productions, which is reinforced by the presence of cameras. As soon as someone enters one of your installations, he is already part of your work. Either your cameras or installations are not noticed at all or you discover them and act confidently on the stage created for you personally. Transit areas such as B. the red carpet of the Berlinale or train stations are particularly attractive to the artist. These public spaces can be experienced in a wide variety of ways and yet contain moments of intimacy that the artist is really looking for in her work. In her compositions, Korfmann chooses an excerpt that enables her to make the respective situation transparent. This is expanded, extended in time and thus denies the "originality" of the actual magical moment. The implementation of this idea becomes clear in the work "waiting for Julia (3x10min)", where the artist takes part of the red carpet at different times and subsequently merges the individual images into a complete work. Often the viewer of the work becomes the subject of it. On the side of the "frame" as well as on the side of "being framed", it is even essential for the exhibition to work.

In many of her works, Katrin Korfmann also plays with the relationship between space and surface. In her work “gray 12min 30sec” from 2007, for example, she reflects the space as an image. In earlier works she also set up monochrome color surfaces in public places (e.g. “white wall”, 2000), which take away the depth of the space and reduce it to a surface structure. At the same time, however, her installation creates a new space that is related to the surroundings. In this way, she creates unoccupied rooms, whereby the colors allow a subjective interpretation and the surfaces a projection background. The real environment remains invisible, knowledge and context disappear, what remains is the time experienced in the newly created space.
