Rest of the former lime kiln

The Katzenbacher Ziegelhütte is a former homestead with a lime kiln belonging to the Rottenburg district of Weiler .

The Katzenbacher Ziegelhütte is located around two kilometers southwest of the center of Weiler at around 370 meters above sea level in the "Seven Valleys", in which the Katzenbach , a tributary of the Neckar , flows. Not far away is the Seven Valleys Cave . A circular hiking trail at least four kilometers long leads from the Bad Niedernau spa park through the Katzenbachtal past the Katzenbacher Ziegelhütte to the Brunnenwiesen on the hamlet plateau and via Schloßbergstrasse, Öschweg and Raidtweg back to the spa park / Kurhaus Niedernau.

history

The Katzenbacher Ziegelhütte, first mentioned in 1483, was used as a brickworks from 1658. Even then, there was a small house there, which was followed by another with a barn in 1830. Very early on, the homestead had running water, which was drawn from a spring about 200 meters away via a pressure pipe. Remains of the complex can be admired in the forest to the west of the homestead. The brick factory in Katzenbachtal was shut down in 1906. In the same year, a lime kiln with a lime works was added to the building that had been in existence until 1957. The shell limestone in the immediate vicinity, around 215 million years old, was used . The bricks were burned from clay deposits . A house made entirely of Katzenbach bricks is located in Weiler directly on the main thoroughfare (L 385).

Collapse and demolition

In April 2012, the former lime distillery, which had been in danger of collapsing since 2001, collapsed. Only the stone-built kiln for burning lime remained. The actual brickworks had been demolished decades earlier.
