The Katzentrögel is a rock section on the northern slope of the Platte in the Steinwald and is only a few minutes' walk north of the Upper Palatinate Tower , hidden in the forest. At 941  m above sea level NHN is the rock a little higher than the opposite Kösseine in Fichtelgebirge . The rock is designated as a natural monument .

history

Before the Upper Palatinate Tower was built on the slab, the Katzentrögelfelsen was one of the most visited viewpoints in the Steinwald. 125 years ago the first climbing facility was built for the highest platform. The strange name “Katzentrögel” is said to come from a deepening of weathering in the southwest corner of the granite rocks. At the time when, according to legend, giants still lived in the stone forest, their cats had their little troughs there.

In 2007 the climbing facility was closed for nature conservation reasons. The path leading there has been marked and the stairs have been removed.

Memorial stone near the cat's roe

Northeast below the Katzentrögels a memorial stone commemorates the five-year-old Johann Franz from Harlachberg , who got lost in the Steinwald on April 8, 1873 and whose remains were only found more than a year later on September 19, 1874.
