The Oberpfalzturm is a wooden observation tower at 946  m above sea level. NHN high plate , the highest mountain of the stone forest and the northern Upper Palatinate in the Bavarian district of Tirschenreuth .

150 steel grating steps lead to the viewing platform at a height of 30 m. From there, a distant view of the Fichtel Mountains , the Egerland , the Stiftland and the Upper Palatinate Forest is possible. In a north-easterly direction, with very good visibility, the Fichtelberg (Ore Mountains) approx. 86 km away and in a south-easterly direction, the Große Arber in the Bavarian Forest , approx. 118 km away .

history

The first massive observation tower was built in 1971/72 by the Steinwald Nature Park Association. V. erected from Steinwald spruce . This tower was 26 m high and thus lower than today's tower.

  • In 1972 the then State Secretary Alfred Dick from the Ministry of the Environment was inaugurated the Upper Palatinate Tower.
  • In 1989, rain and frost gnawed seriously for almost 20 years, and damage to the foundation had to be repaired.
  • In the spring of 1990, the supports and struts of the Upper Palatinate Tower had to be renovated at a cost of 67,000 DM.
  • In 1991 the foundation had to be repaired again.
  • In 1993, the focus was on the renovation of the Upper Palatinate Tower; some of the main structural timber that had been repaired had to be replaced.
  • In 1994 an underground hut was built on the Oberpfalzturm.
  • In 1995 it was time to check the stability of the Upper Palatinate Tower.
  • Due to dilapidation, the old Upper Palatinate Tower had to be demolished on April 1, 1998.

The engineer Ferdinand Lehner from Tirschenreuth was then commissioned to design and build a new tower.

On September 10, 2000, the new Upper Palatinate Tower was inaugurated. It is 35 m high and was made of larch - LVL built. The city of Erbendorf took over the property development , the costs amounted to approx. 400,000 DM. The European Union , the Free State of Bavaria , the district of Tirschenreuth and the surrounding cities and communities gave grants .
