Katzenturm (Munich)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Katzenturm was a defense tower in the second city wall of medieval Munich .

location

The Katzenturm was located in the Angerviertel in the east of Munich's old town between Schiffertor and Taeckentor , about 100 m west of Taeckentor. At this point, the Radlsteg joins the Westenrieder Straße today. The tower stood over the Kaltenbach , one of Munich's city streams , which took up the entire width of today's Radlsteg.

history

The cat tower was first mentioned in 1417/18. The name is probably derived from a type of throwing machine. From 1450 the former Kaltenbach was also called Katzenbach. However, it is not known whether such throwing machines were set up on the tower or were kept in it.

A fountain house on the Katzenbach was first mentioned in 1615 . The Katzenturm was now used as a water tower to store the groundwater extracted from the creek's hydropower.

The Katzenturm was torn down in the middle of the 19th century, probably at the same time as the neighboring Taeckentor, which was demolished in 1866/67.
