The Buy Nothing Day ( English Buy Nothing Day ) is a consumer-critical and growth-critical action last Friday (North America) or Saturday (Europe) in November. It is organized in over 60 countries.

In America, this day is also the Black Friday , the day after Thanksgiving ( English Thanksgiving ), have released to the many Americans and trade marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season with many discounts and bargains. Black Friday is about the fifth day of the year with the highest sales. A 24-hour abstinence from consumption is intended to protest against "exploitative production and trading strategies of international corporations and financial groups" and to encourage reflection about their own consumer behavior and the global effects. Conscious buying behavior aimed at sustainability of each individual should be encouraged.

The Buy Nothing Day was invented in 1992 by the Canadian artist Ted Dave, taken up by the Canadian media and advertising agency Adbusters Media Foundation (active for Greenpeace and the American Greens) and, among other things. a. sponsored by the Esprit company founder.

In Germany, the day of action was organized by the association “Narra e. V. ”and Konsumnetz-AG of the globalization-critical network Attac .

Outside of the USA, this day of protest is hardly known and - apart from isolated actions by groups like Attac - it receives little attention. In Austria, the collective monochrom supported the project in particular ; however, the group decided not to carry out any more actions from 2013 onwards.
