The Sunday department store is a department store built in 1902 in downtown Detmold . It has been a listed building since September 18, 1989.

history

As early as the 19th century there was a department store on the corner of Lange Strasse and Marktplatz in Detmold, which the merchants Wilhelm Sonntag and Heinrich Vos had taken over from the previous owner Heinrichs in 1883. A photo from around 1880 shows a rather simple, two-storey building with a gable roof, a dwelling facing the market and a balcony on the gable side facing Langen Strasse. The tall shop windows on the ground floor were also noticeable here.

After the old house was demolished, a new commercial building was built between 1902 and 1903 according to the plans of the architect Friedrich Geb, professor at the Technical University in Hanover . Heinrich Vos left the company in 1914, and Wilhelm Sonntag jun. Took over in 1915. as sole owner of his father's business. The department store is still run as a family business.

architecture

The department store is a four-story solid building with five window axes on the eaves side facing the market square. The building with the stucco facade made of Gothic Renaissance and Art Nouveau motifs is based on the design of Hanseatic department store buildings.

The facade to the market square is structured by pilaster strips up to the roof edge. With the exception of the two dormer windows, all windows are segmented arched windows, on the ground floor as large shop windows up to the former gallery floor . Above is a floor with coupled windows separated by a column. The window parapet on the top floor, which originally served as an apartment, is richly decorated with stucco. On the floor, the two outer windows on the eaves side are also designed as balcony doors, the balconies are surrounded by iron railings. On the gable side there is a bay on a pronounced console at the same height in the middle window axis . The twin windows in the bay are colored leaded glass windows , in the upper arch with the initials "WS".

The gable side and the three dwelling houses on the eaves side with elaborate glare gables , the saddle roof is covered with red double pan pan.

During renovations inside the building, the gallery floor was redesigned to a full floor and the spacious staircase was also removed. In 1956 and 1979, the facade above the ground floor was given a cantilever roof facing Langen Strasse and the market square, which visually divided the shop windows over the ground floor and gallery floor .
