With shop or grocery store only one is now generally children's toys referred to, which is a small retail store replicates for food and other everyday goods.

Originally shop (even grocery store , corner shop , general store , grocery store or grocery store ) is primarily a term for a retail operation, the majority since the 1950s mom and pop shop is called. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, these shops were increasingly displaced by supermarkets, drugstores and discounters, and at least they had almost completely disappeared from the image of German cities by the year 2000. From 2000, however, there was also a certain tendency towards the return of small businesses, often run as family businesses by immigrants or start-ups.

Older shops are mostly designed as doll shops for playing with dolls and miniature goods (similar to a doll's house ). Such shops have been known at least since the early 19th century and - like dollhouses - were usually made as individual items by carpenters or other craftsmen. Around 1900 toy factories began to sell fully equipped shops that often had well-known branded products in their assortments.

In addition to grocery and colonial goods stores with a wide range, there were also displays of retail specialty stores such as fabric and fashion stores, hat stores, pharmacies and even antique stores from the start. With their assortment of goods, which are often crowded together in a rather small space, the doll shops convey a picture of the retail culture at the time they were created. Shops - at least those with a range that was not “specifically female” (women's fashion, hats) - were toys for boys and girls alike, while doll kitchens and dollhouses were reserved for girls.

In the second half of the 20th century, doll shops were replaced by toy shops in the toy market. Only in the wake of the nostalgia wave of the 1980s were old and replica doll shops popular again as collector's items (such as the Maggi shop , a kit made by Marianne Modelle that was sold by the food manufacturer Maggi in an edition of 5000 from 1980–1986 ). In shop fittings and supermarket replicas from system toy manufacturers such as Playmobil , the shape of the doll shop lives on to this day as children's toys.

Game shop from 1960

Since the 20th century, shops have increasingly been made as toys for children's role play : one child takes on the role of a merchant or salesman, other children or adults come to shop as customers. The customer stands in front of the counter and can admire the display. The (sales) conversation is held over the counter. Dealing with each other and dealing with money and goods is learned through play.

Such shops are referred to as a game shop , sales booth or stand shop . They are usually made of wood (less often plastic) and designed as a shelf , which can also be provided with drawers and / or doors and a wall clock. The rear wall of the shelf is almost always connected to the (front) counter by means of folding doors, shelves or shelves. The shop is to be entered in such a way that the seller is behind the counter. The counter often contains a display z. B. for fruit and vegetables. As accessories z. B. cash register , play money , scales and clothing such. B. white coats offered. Some toy shops can also be converted into a small puppet theater or post office in just a few simple steps .

Reduced packs of goods and replicas are available in toy stores: food, fruit, vegetables, beverages, cleaning agents, personal care items, etc. Sample packs and small-format real products can also be used. Well-known branded items are often included in ready-made shop assortments - for branded companies such replicas give advertising access to the play world of toddlers.

Although the retail form with sales shelves and counters is almost only familiar to children today through bakeries and butchers, the form of shops has not yet fundamentally adapted to today's everyday supermarkets and discounters. One reason for this could be that with self-service the occasions for verbal communication are much lower. Modern elements can be found above all in the range of goods and in cash register technology: some retail cash registers are modeled on modern supermarket cash registers and equipped with scales, credit card readers , microphones for announcements and goods conveyor belts. But there are also toys, such as shopping trolleys and self-service tills, for simulating self-service .
