Buildings at the port of Port Askaig

The shop of Port Askaig is located directly at the ferry terminal of Port Askaig on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . The buildings are located at the end of the A846 on Islay, directly opposite the Port Askaig jetty. A combined shop and post office is located on the ground floor of the north of the two buildings. The upper floor is used as living space. The south-facing house is rented out as a holiday home. First, on July 20, 1971, the buildings were entered as part of an ensemble in Category B of the Scottish List of Monuments . In 2006 this monument ensemble was dissolved and it was recategorized as a single monument in category C.

description

The exact time of construction of the building is not recorded, so that only the earlier 19th century for the northern and the later 19th century for the southern house can be given as the construction period. The north building is built in a Victorian style . It is one-story and has a converted attic that is illuminated on both sides by two dormers. The front door, set in the middle of the front, is symmetrically surrounded by two larger windows. The southern house is two-story, but has the same ridge height . It is built in the traditional Scottish style. The entrance door is on the side of a small porch that protrudes in the middle from the front and ends with a pent roof . This is symmetrically surrounded by five lattice windows . There are five muntin windows on the back. A short, one-story extension connects to the south. All the buildings are plastered and have slate roofs .
