Kilmeny Parish Church

The Kilmeny Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland near Kilmeny on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in a small forest off the A846 a few hundred meters southwest of Ballygrant . On July 20, 1971, Kilmeny Parish Church was added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. It is not to be confused with Kilmany Parish Kirk in Fife .

history

About 400 m to the southwest are the ruins of the former Church of the Parish . This building was first mentioned in 1549 and was possibly dedicated to Saint Eithne, mother of Saint Columban . He is probably the namesake of Kilmeny and is derived from the Gaelic Cill a 'Mhanaich (monk's cemetery). The new church building was erected in 1829. After the Parish Kilmeny was separated from the Parish Kilarrow and Kilmeny in 1849, the building became the main church of Parish Kilmeny. Church services are still held there regularly today. The clergy used to have access to the associated rectory in Kilmeny , which is also listed .

description

The simple Georgian style building has a T-shaped floor plan. It consists of quarry stone and is set off on the edges with sandstone. The facades are whitewashed. Various arched windows let light into the building. At the end of the slate-covered gable roof sits a simple bell tower that ends with a pyramid roof . The interior of the building is kept simple and was renovated around 1880.
