The kausia ( Greek καυσία ) was a cap of Macedonian origin in ancient Greece that was worn by men.

Description and use

The Kausia was made of felt and was a beret -like , flat cap similar to a beret that was used as sun protection. With the Macedonians it served as a prestige object and was often richly decorated. Later they were only used as a cheap commodity that was worn by all classes of society. Greek and Macedonian soldiers often wore the kausia in their spare time.

history

This headgear originally comes from Macedonia. It existed since the 4th century BC. And spread with the campaigns of Alexander the Great in Greece and the Middle East. In the 2nd century BC The Kausia was also used in Italy and Rome , especially by the lower social classes.

A total of over 750 depictions of the Kausia have been preserved to this day.
