The skittles cycle path runs 27 kilometers from Hünfeld to Rasdorf across the Hessian skittles . He largely uses the route of the former Hünfeld – Wenigentaft-Mansbach railway . The official opening of the cycle path was on April 27, 2007. The
start and end point of the route are approx. 250 m above sea level, the apex was the old Eiterfeld-Leibolz train station at a height of 359.86 m above sea level.

Stations of the route

Along the cycle path you can see numerous historical souvenirs of the railway connection at the time, former railway buildings, rails, signal systems and - as a special highlight at the former Ostbahnhof Burghaun - a historic railway wagon, which has been completely restored and converted into a café.

The Kegelspielradweg connects the Haunetal with the Ulstertal and the corresponding cycle paths Haunetalradweg and Ulsterradweg . As a railway cycle path, there is only a slight gradient of 1.7 percent to overcome in the otherwise very hilly terrain, with the exception of a few short sections that have to be bypassed for nature conservation reasons. The border between Hesse and Thuringia is crossed between Treischfeld and Wenigentaft .

The stations of the route are: Hünfeld - Gruben - Burghaun - Klausmarbach - Steinbach - Betzenrod - Eiterfeld - Leibolz - Großentaft - Grüsselbach - Rasdorf

history

Passenger trains and finally only freight trains ran on the old railway line from 1906 until the railway line was finally abandoned in 1992, as the route had largely lost its importance due to the division of Germany. The railway was popularly known as “Die Bimbel”, as the trains were announced in the early decades by a bell on the locomotive with constant tinkling at level crossings and stops.

A double-track expansion planned in the 1930s was discontinued during the war years in 1942. During this time, the most imposing structure on the route was given its current appearance, the viaduct near Klausmarbach.

Adventure points along the way

Burghauner Cafe

Among other things, a historic railway wagon and a signal display at kilometer 4.3 have been restored. The wagon is now used as a café with a beer garden.

Viaduct Klausmarbach

Another attraction on the route is the viaduct near Klausmarbach, a 32 meter high sandstone vault bridge that spans the valley in five 18 meter wide arches. This bridge was widened in 1938 by a sandstone-faced concrete structure to enable the former railway line to have two tracks .

Adventure resting place "Grillplatz Steinbach"

Rest area set up by the “Siegels-Steinbruch-Steinbach” development association in an old sandstone quarry near Steinbach on the route. There are various seating areas, a wooden fun bowling alley and a playground.

The OPEN BOOK

Dialect table on the Klausmarbach Viaduct

With the opening of the 2009 cycling season, the new attraction "The OPEN BOOK along the Kegelspielradweg" was presented on April 4th . Typical idioms in Rhön dialect were used at 22 stations on the cycle path .

realization

The Kegelspielradweg was built between 2005 and 2007 by the Kegelspielradweg working group at a cost of around € 5.3 million. The working group includes the city of Hünfeld, the market communities Eiterfeld and Burghaun and the community of Rasdorf. The construction was made possible in particular by generous financial support from the State of Hesse. The district of Fulda also contributed to the construction costs of the community part of the working group.
