Structure of the human skin with appendages

The germinal layer (Latin stratum germinativum ) is the lower layer of the epidermis made up of living cells . Above that is the horny layer . The dead cells of the germ layer migrate into the horny layer and are replaced by new cells. As a result, the epidermis is constantly renewed.

The germ layer consists of the basal cell layer ( stratum basale ) and the prickly cell layer ( stratum spinosum ). Pigment cells in the germ layer, which determine the skin color with the dye melanin , offer protection against UV radiation . In the germ layer there are also free nerve endings for feeling pain .
