The Eidgenössische Forschungskellerei Wädenswil is a winery in Wädenswil in Switzerland , part of the Agroscope , which researches arable and fodder cultivation, fruit, vine, vegetable and ornamental crops as well as berries, medicinal and aromatic plants for the Swiss Confederation .

Emergence

Wädenswil Castle, center of the research institute

The winery of the Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW research institute , formerly the Wädenswil FAW research institute , was established in 1890. The federal government took over this facility in 1902. The two different stations, Wädenswil (German-speaking Switzerland) and Changins (western Switzerland), merged a little over a hundred Years later to the Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW research station. In 1940 the building was renovated, completely refurbished, added on, modernized and enlarged.

Vineyards

The vineyard area of the FAW shrank again and again over time. Around 1950 there were still more than 10 hectares of vineyards, in 2011 it was around 5.5 hectares. Since work began in the FAW's research cellar (ACW), tests have been carried out there annually. Some of these projects are carried out in the research vineyard on the other side of the lake in Stäfa in the Sternenhalde, and partly directly in the vineyard around the winery.

Possible attempts are e.g. B. vine, spray -, fertilizer tests to prove their effectiveness in viticulture in detail or to record their effectiveness in statistics. This enables all winegrowers in German-speaking Switzerland to spray and protect properly and effectively. In addition, the effectiveness of aids is checked. Cloning tests of the same varieties are also very important in order to record their resistance or specific properties and to weigh them against each other.

Self-pressing

The own winery in the winery building has existed since the FAW was founded and was modernized, renovated and enlarged in 1940. Experiments have been carried out there since time immemorial. On the basis of research results, workflows or types of application in grape processing or young or old wine development are adapted or changed in order to ensure the quality of the wine is produced or improved against loss of quality, i.e. H. to shape differently in aroma, taste and color intensity.

Almost a quarter of the cultivated area is used for testing, the rest of the system is known varieties such as Chardonnay , Müller-Thurgau (Riesling Sylvaner), Pinot Noir (Pinot Noir), Gris (Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio) Räuschling (Zürirebe, Züriseerebe) . These grapes are used to produce wines that are sold to the public every year.

education

Wine technologists and winemakers are trained in the winery ; they change annually, or they can spend their entire professional training (3 years) there. A wine technologist and a winemaker are trained every three years in the Wädenswil winery. A winemaker is trained in Stäfa every three years.
