history

For centuries, Kelso Abbey was the spiritual center of Kelso. A church building there served as a parish church . In 1753 the parish was split into three newly created ones. With the increase in the population of Kelso in the 19th century, a new parish was created with Kelso North . Its first pastor was the poet Horatius Bonar . With the "disruption" of 1843, the Free Church of Scotland split off. In 1866 their congregation had today's church building built. The Scottish architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington provided the design. Like most Free Church congregations, Kelso North merged with the Church of Scotland in 1929. Through amalgamations in the course of the 20th century, the parish took on three more. It now serves as the parish church for the parish of Kelso North and Ednam .
