Kempston (pronounced "Kemstun") is a town in the English county of Bedfordshire . Kempston was once considered the largest village in Great Britain, but is now an administrative city. In 2001 the city had about 19,000 inhabitants. Kempston forms part of the county's border. The city is considered a student residence for the nearby towns of Bedford and Milton Keynes .
Kempston has a railway line. London Luton Airport is around 16 miles from the city .
history
In 1671 about 750 people lived in 150 houses in Kempston. In 1826, 40 houses were destroyed by a fire in the city. In 1844, during the tenure of Pastor Henry Clutterbuck , the first school was built in town. This was called the Church End School . The second school was built and opened ten years later, in 1854. In 1889 a third school was built. In 1904, the Kempston East Methodist Church , a church , was built in Kempston . The first volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1907 and taken over by the city of Kempstock in 1937. In 1954 a primary school was built in the city.
