Kenji Shimizu ( Japanese 清水 健 二 , Shimizu Kenji ; * 1940 in Fukuoka Prefecture , Iizuka City, Tentō District, Japan ) began training in judo in 1953 and was 4th Dan when he graduated from Meiji in 1963 -University , switched to Aikidō . He became one of the last personal students ( Uchi-Deshi ) of Ueshiba Morihei , the founder of Aikidō. When Ueshiba died in 1969, Shimizu held the 4th dan. In the same year he founded the Shimizu Dōjō in Tokyo , which he renamed Tendokan (Gateway to Heaven) in 1975 . Shimizu stayed in Aikikai until 1973 and then switched to IMAF . In 1982 he finally founded his own Aikido style with the name Tendoryu (Japanese , ten “heaven”, do “way”, ryu “school”).

In 1987, Master Shimizu separated from the IMAF and founded the Nihon Budo Kokusai Renmei with other Budo masters . In 1988 he was awarded the 8th Dan.

The term Tendo is derived from a word in the classical Chinese work The Golden Middle Way , which says that sincerity is the way to heaven. At the same time, this is also the name of Master Shimizu's place of birth.

Since 1978, Master Shimizu has held seminars several times a year in Germany and other European countries. In 1993 the German Tendoryu Association (TAD) was officially founded.

Tendoryu Aikido is characterized by large, clear movements and impresses with its naturalness and harmonious flow of movement.

Shimizu- Sensei received the award of the Japanese Foreign Minister for the year Heisei  14 (2002) for the many years of spreading Aikidō abroad . In recognition of his special merits in the long-term cultural exchange with other countries, Shimizu Sensei was invited by the imperial family to the garden party in 2002 in the Akasaka Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
