Kenneth Cooper Alexander (born October 17, 1966 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a Senator in the Virginia Senate from 2012 to 2016 , representing the 5th District. He has been the Mayor of Norfolk since 2016.

Life

Alexander grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. He attended John Tyler Community College in Chester , Virginia, where he received an associate degree . He then studied at Old Dominion University , where he received a Bachelor of Science (BS) and continued his studies at Norwich University , where he received a Master of Arts (MA).

Alexander works as an undertaker. The family-owned Metropolitan Funeral Service has two locations, one in Norfolk and one in Portsmouth , Virginia.

In August 2002, Alexander was elected to the House of Representatives of Virginia in a by-election to fill the vacant seat of Jerrauld Jones , where he represented the 89th District. He was re-elected in 2009 and 2011. When the Democratic Senator Yvonne B. Miller died in July 2012, he ran successfully in the by-election to be held on September 4, 2012 and thus entered the Virginia Senate. Alexander's vacant seat in the Virginia House of Representatives was replaced by a by-election on December 18, 2012. His party colleague Daun Hester managed to win the mandate . In May 2016, he was elected the new Mayor of Norfolk with 51.68% of the votes cast. The previous mayor Paul Fraim had decided not to run again. Alexander resigned from the Senate on June 30 and took office on July 1, 2016. He is the city's first African-American mayor.

Before his political career, he was active in various municipal commissions for his hometown. Alexander is married and has two sons.
