Keonjhar was a princely state of British India in what is now the state of Odisha . Its capital was the place Keonjhar (today's name: Kendujhar ).

It was created in the Middle Ages by dividing Mayurbhanj . Keonjhar was under the sovereignty of the Marathas until 1803 and was a British protectorate from 1829 to 1947 . In 1901 it had an area of 8019 km² and a population of 286,000.

The Raja joined the Eastern States Union in August 1947 . On January 1, 1948, this union was dissolved and Keonjhar was incorporated into Orissa (Odisha) and thus India . On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved.
