history

founding

The Lewada Center was founded in 2003 as the successor to the independent opinion research institute WZIOM . The reason was the hiring of state employees in the management of WZIOM by the Russian Ministry of Property Relations in August 2003. This gave representatives of the Russian administration the opportunity to control and monitor parts of the center. As a result, all previous employees of WZIOM quit their jobs and continue their activities under the new name "WZIOM-A". After the Antimonopoly Service of the Russian Federation banned the use of this name, the organization was renamed the Levada Analytical Center (Levada Center) .

activities

The Lewada Center is continuing the research programs and surveys that they started under WZIOM in the years 1990-2000. One of the largest projects of the Levada Center was the study “The Soviet Man” (“Homo soveticus”, Russian Советский Человек ). In various surveys, specialists use the monitoring technology to reveal the greatest trends in the social development of Russian society over the past 15 years.

The Levada Center also publishes the yearbook “Russian Public Opinion” in Russian and English, which is used in various media.

Registration as "foreign agent"

On September 5, 2016, the polling institute was classified as a so-called " foreign agent " by Russian authorities . According to the official justification, the Levada Center receives funds from abroad, primarily from the United States. The classification was made at the request of the " Anti-Maidan " movement, which accused the Lewada Center of acting on behalf of the United States through contact with the University of Wisconsin – Madison . Director Lev Gudkov described the allegations as slander. The institute collaborates with various research institutes, the collaboration with the University of Madison recently focused on researching the living conditions of families in Russia. According to its own information, the institute has not received any foreign funding since a similar study in 2013. Gudkov announced that he wanted to take action against the decision. The classification as a "foreign agent" made two weeks before the parliamentary election prevents independent opinion research and is a form of political censorship , said Gudkow. He attributed the decision to a Levada poll, which recorded a significant decline in the popularity of the United Russia party in August 2016. The center's activities have been temporarily suspended.
