Kerhart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kerhart (or Gerhart; † May 22, 1001 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen from 990 to 1001 .

Life

Before he was elected abbot, it is reported that Kerhart was the companion of his confrere and former abbot of Niederaltaich Kunibert when he died on a trip. Kerhart began his reign after January 27, 990. He may have signed a neumed hymn to Gregory the Great . He could have been its writer or composer.

Act

Kerhart does not get off well in St. Gallen historiography: The squandering of monastery goods and the ruin of monastery breeding by him is said to have led to a split in the convent. One party, consisting of older, rule-abiding conventuals, sued him in the aftermath of Emperor Otto . A Count Muozo had to come to his aid and prevent the process. Kerhart is said to have acted worse than before.
