Nortpert

Nortpert († after 1076 ) was abbot of the St. Gallen monastery from 1034 to 1072 .

Act

Nortpert was called from the reform monastery of Stablo to St. Gallen to reintroduce stricter monastic forms of life there as abbot. Despite resistance from the St. Gallen monks, he was able to successfully implement his reform program. In 1040 he received King Heinrich III. , whom he accompanied on his Italian train in 1046 . 1047 he obtained in Rome the canonization of St. Gallen local saint Wiborada that during the Hungarian invasion the martyrdom had found. As an abbot trying to uphold the property rights of his monastery, he got into a bloody conflict with Bishop Rumold of Constance . After a reign of 38 years, he abdicated in 1072.
