Kerling volcano is located in the north of Iceland . It is located on the Tröllaskagi peninsula south of Öxnadalsheiði , over which the ring road from Skagafjörður to Akureyri runs.
The mountain was an active central volcano about 6–7 million years ago and is 1538 m high, making it the highest mountain on the Tröllaskagi peninsula, which has a total of over 1,000 m high mountains. At the same time it is also the highest mountain in inhabited areas in northern Iceland.
At the top of the summit there is a considerable layer of rhyolite and also one of sour, i.e. H. high proportions of ash containing silicate , which indicates its time as an active central volcano. Otherwise the Kerling consists mainly of basalt, like most mountains on Tröllaskagi.
The neighboring Súlur , Akureyri's local mountain, with its 1,213 m high summit also belongs to its volcanic system . And this system once extended northwards beyond the Glerárdalur to the lower slopes of the Vindheimajökull .
Hiking trails lead from Finnastaðir up the mountain. As far as is known, the first ascent was carried out in 1810 by the Norwegian Hans Frisak , which was considered an outrageous act at the time.
