The Öxnadalsheiði plateau is located between Skagafjörður and Eyjafjörður in the north of Iceland . It is actually a valley that lies between the Norðurárdalur and the Öxnadalur .
The pass road of the same name is part of the ring road . In the west in Skagafjörður it follows the valley of the Norðurá in an easterly direction, then it rises up to 450 m on the plateau before finally turning north and more gently over the plateau and then down the valleys Öxnadalur and Hörgárdalur to Eyjafjörður .
At the top, a road that is dangerous in winter when there is black ice runs alongside a ravine.
The landscape is characterized by the mountains of the Tröllaskagi peninsula , which are often over 1,000 m high , and which one crosses here.
Various layers of earth, including those with a high iron content , can be seen at the beginning of the mountain road in the Kotagil gorge (north of the path).
Just below the top of the pass there is a now abandoned farm called Bakkasel , which in earlier times was often the last point of protection and shelter for travelers in need. It is reported that 200 people slept here during a snow storm in the 19th century.
The romantic poet Jónas Hallgrímsson grew up in a small side valley by Lake Hraunsvatn in the 19th century.
Famous is the Hraundrangi , a 1,075 m high summit in the north-west of the road, which consists of a series of rock peaks shaped by the glacier and other erosion forms.
