Kessel-Lo is a sub-municipality of the Belgian city of Leuven . The part of the name Kessel goes back to the Latin castellum . Lo , on the other hand, is a historical expression in Dutch for forest .
history
The founding date of Kessel-Lo is unknown, but a small fortress stood on the Kesselen Mountains as early as Roman times .
Count Gottfried I von Löwen , then Duke of Lower Lorraine, donated the Allod Vlierbeek to the Affligem Abbey in 1125 with the intention that the Abbey would found a Benedictine monastery there. After the abolition of all monasteries by the French rulers on September 1, 1796, the monks were forced to leave Vlierbeek Abbey in 1797 .
Kessel-Lo consists of the parts Kessel and Lo. Before 1827 Kessel belonged to the municipality of Linden and Lo to the municipality of Pellenberg . In 1827 these were combined to form the new municipality of Kessel-Lo.
Until 1977 Kessel-Lo was an independent municipality. On January 1, 1977, Kessel-Lo was incorporated into the city of Leuven as part of the merger of Belgian municipalities .
