Ketewan Andronikaschwili ( Georgian ქეთევან ანდრონიკაშვილი, * 1754 ; † June 3, 1782 in Tbilisi ), was a Georgian noblewoman and the first wife of King Giorgi XII. from Kartlien-Kakheti . In 1778 she personally led the Georgian cavalry in a victorious battle against the Lesgier mountain people .

biography

Princess Ketewan was born as a child of the noble Andronikashvili family, one of the leading noble houses of the eastern Georgian kingdom of Kakheti, which referred to the origin of the Comnen dynasty. Her father, Prince Papuna Andronikashvili, ruled over the historical province of Heretia , whose name at that time was Kiziqi. She had three brothers, Melkizedek, Iese, and Rewaz.

In 1766, Ketewan married Giorgi, the eldest son of King Erekle II. This marriage helped the Andronikashvili family, and especially Ketewan's brother Rewaz, to gain more influence at the royal court against the rival noble family Dadiani , which was supported by Erecle 's wife Darejan Dadiani .

In October 1778, the then 24-year-old Ketewan played an important role in a battle at Ghartiskari that was part of a centuries-long conflict between the Georgians and the Lesgiians. On the road to Tbilisi she met a 500-strong Lesgier troop. She personally led her entourage, consisting of 300 cavalrymen, into the fight against the Lesgier and won. When Erekle heard the news, he received his daughter-in-law at the entrance to Tbilisi with full military honors . Due to complications in her last birth, she died in Tbilisi in 1782. She was buried in Dawit Gareja monastery .
