The Ketschenburg Brauerei GmbH was a brewery in the city of Stolberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian city region of Aachen . It existed from 1817 (Christoph Brückmann Brewery) to 1985 and brewed beers according to the Pilsener brewing style , Altbier and lager . According to their own information, water from a well 84 meters deep was used for brewing. The slogan was “ Drink a ketch! ".

In 1977 the brewery received an award from the German Agricultural Society (DLG).

The administrative headquarters of the EWV energy and water supply have been located in the building since 1998 .

Name origin

Christoph Brückmann probably chose the name Ketschenburg because of an incident that occurred in Aachen in the 18th century . In the vicinity of the then still existing Adalbertstor on today's Adalbertstrasse was a restaurant that belonged to the Kalviner Hachtmann. There was a statue of the Virgin Mary above the entrance to the house, which he had removed. When this became known, his house was popularly called "Castle of the Heretic" or "Heretic's Castle". The name "Ketschenburg" was later derived from this name. It can no longer be said whether Christoph Brückmann was only impressed by the story or the name. His brewery in Stolberg took over the name Ketschenburg; however, the castle in the company emblem represents Stolberg Castle in the 19th century.

Brands

The most famous beer brands of the Ketschenburg brewery were:

In addition, special beers were brewed, but these were only offered on special occasions.

In the 19th century there were numerous breweries in Stolberg. The Mommertz brewery existed in the city, but was closed again shortly after it was founded in 1865. Other breweries are known from the same period, such as the “Caspar Viehöfer Brewery”, the “F. Richard Welter Brewery”, the “O. Wirtz "and" J. Brückmann ".

In 1904 A. Welter closed his brewery. Until 1920 "Albert Katterbach Wwe." Brewed beers in Stolberg. Besides the Ketschenburg, the longest active brewery in the brass town was the "Wirte Brauerei GmbH", which closed its doors in 1936.

It is obvious that so many breweries in a small town like Stolberg meant great competition. There were also deliveries from the “Abtei Bräu” existing in Kornelimünster to the city area.

For this reason the Ketschenburg brewery was interested in making its beer known. The promotional measures included imprints on beer glasses, beer mats and ashtrays printed with the company logo, advertisements on house walls, as well as neon advertisements and advertising postcards.

Restart

Since the end of 2008 beer has been brewed again under the Ketschenburg brand . The Aldenhovener beverage wholesale Willy Bongartz, the mid-1980s, the brewing rights acquired, sold it in August 2008 to a local private owner. Since the end of 2008 he has had this beer brewed on a small scale in a Munich brewery according to the original recipe and sells it in the Stolberg area. Production was discontinued in 2017.
