In Germany and Austria, the registration office or vehicle registration authority is the registration authority that is responsible for issuing operating permits and other relevant documents as well as for the registration of motor vehicles . Vehicle registration authorities belong to the scope of duties of the respective road traffic authorities; there is no responsibility for vehicles from the THW or the Bundeswehr , among others .

The registration office is not a subordinate authority of the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA). These tasks are performed by the independent cities or by the district or district offices, in special cases by certain cities.

A similar authority exists in Switzerland under the name of the Road Traffic Office.

In Germany, the licensing authorities are administered as part of the districts , district offices , community associations and communities . There are a total of 706 registration offices in Germany, of which 421 are main offices and 279 branches and 6 are police registration authorities. The highest number of registration offices can be found in Bavaria at 155, the lowest at 2 (one main and one subsidiary) in Berlin. The Federal Motor Transport Authority maintains a list of registration offices.

The districts are differentiated by so-called distinctive signs in accordance with Section 8, Paragraph 2 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV), which do not always correspond to the first letters of the respective communities and districts. Each district is also assigned a statistical code number of the responsible licensing authority (STBA no.), Which is derived from the district key .

Austria

In Austria, the competences of the official registration offices were transferred to the private motor insurance companies, including the removal of license plates. The approval offices act as an authority. A registration of the vehicle is therefore possible in every registration office in the registration district - regardless of the insurer.

The registration, de-registration and re-registration of a motor vehicle is the most public-intensive task of this office. Depending on the staff and equipment, there are often longer waiting times for citizens. At many offices you can now reserve your desired license plate for an additional fee.

To register your vehicle in Austria, you need an official photo ID, proof of your main place of residence, a confirmation of insurance and proof of authorization or an authorization document. This document can be the type certificate, an individual approval or a data extract from the approval database when it is first approved.

When registering a used car, you also need an approval document and the purchase contract. In addition, you need an inspection report if the car is older than three years. If the vehicle is a self-import, you also need an approval document from the tax office. If someone other than the owner allows the vehicle, you must have a power of attorney with you.

In order to have your vehicle taken out of service at the registration office, you need the registration certificate Part I ( vehicle registration document ), the registration certificate Part II ( vehicle registration document ), the official vehicle registration number and, in the event of the vehicle being recycled, appropriate evidence from a collection point or a recycling company in the sense the end-of-life vehicle regulation .
