Khadija Arib (2015)

Khadija Arib (born October 10, 1960 in Hedami , Morocco ) is a Dutch politician in the Partij van de Arbeid . From 1998 to 2006 and since March 1, 2007, she has been a member of the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament and its chairman since January 13, 2016.

Life

Arib grew up in Morocco, near Casablanca . She came to the Netherlands when she was fifteen. She studied sociology at the College of Social Work and at the University of Amsterdam . She later became an assistant at charities in Breda and Utrecht and worked at the Institute for Social and Economic Sciences at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and as deputy head and senior policy advisor for social and health services in Amsterdam. She is co-founder of the Moroccan women's association in the Netherlands.

In 1989 Arib spent a few weeks in a prison in Morocco. Her husband, Nordine Dahhan, became spokesman for the Committee of Moroccan Workers in the Netherlands (KMAN) and was viewed as "subversive" by the Moroccan government.

She was elected to the Dutch parliament for the first time in the 1998 elections.

In 2009 she published a biography entitled "Couscous op zondag: een familiegeschiedenis" ( Couscous on Sunday: A Family Story ), in which she describes her past from arriving in the Netherlands to her activities in 2009.

After the resignation of Anouchka van Miltenburg (VVD), she became chairwoman of the Second Chamber on January 13, 2016. On March 29, 2017, Arib was re-elected in a highly fragmented parliament with no opposing candidates with 111 out of 122 valid MPs. This is remarkable in that the Partij van de Arbeid, of which Arib is a member, slipped to seventh place in the 2017 election and the office of Parliamentary President is usually occupied by the party with the highest vote.
