The Khan Chentii Protected Area is a protected area in northern Mongolia on the Russian border, which is one of the particularly protected areas of Mongolia. In the south, the reserve is bordered by the Gorchi-Tereldsch National Park , which in turn is directly north of Ulan Bator . The reserve was established in 1992 and protects an area of approximately 13,000 square kilometers. 70% of it is covered with forests. Mountains like the Chentii Mountains add to the scenic diversity of the area. This makes it hosts a number of large mammals, such Maralhirsche , deer , musk deer , wild boar and ibex . The Mongol ruler Genghis Khan is said to have been born on the upper reaches of the Onon , which rises in the reservation .
