Khorramshahr ( Persian خرمشهر; also: Khorramshahr , until 1924 Mohammerah ) is a city ​​on the Iranian side at the confluence of the Euphrates and Tigris , the Shatt al Arab , in the province of Khuzestan with an extrapolated almost 138,400 inhabitants in 2012.

Until 1924, Khorramshahr was under the regional government of the respective Shah , and was called Mohammerah until then. It has been under national administration under its current name since 1924.

Khorramshahr was and is an important port city near Abadan , where there is one of the most important oil production areas in the world.

In the first Gulf War (1980–1988), Khorramshahr was occupied by the Iraqi army from November 1980 to June 1982. The city was almost completely destroyed by the fighting and as a result of the occupation. See battle of Khorramshahr .

There is a university of nautical science and technology in Khorramshahr .

The city has a train station on a branch of the Trans-Iranian Railway .
