Pine lice (Mallophaga, Germanized: Mallophages) are a group of insects . They are wingless insects that are systematically classified in the order of animal lice (Phthiraptera).

The small, wingless animals with flattened bodies live as ectoparasites on birds (also referred to here as "featherlings") and mammals. Most species feed on fragments of feathers, hair, and other parts of the epidermis . Some species also eat glandular secretions by pricking hair follicles . Still others also suck blood from their hosts' wounds. The mouthparts of the lice are chewing. The hosts try to get rid of the parasites through dust baths or ants. The lice are not known to affect humans as well.
