The gravel and bathing lake Birkwitz is a former quarry pond , which lies between Pillnitz and Pirna in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains .
It is about 20 kilometers from Dresden and is located between the Pirna districts of Birkwitz in the north-west and Pratzschwitz in the south-west. The lake is about 900 meters long and 950 meters wide. There are two small islands in it. The western part is used as a swimming lake and is private property. The operator and owner is a company under civil law . A beach festival takes place in July.
Swimming is not permitted in the southern part, it is the property of the German Angler Association .
