Birkwitz is located in the Elbe valley , directly on the orographic right bank of the Elbe in the northwest of the city. Birkwitz was first mentioned in 1350 as "Birkwicz". Later the spellings “Berkewicz”, “Birckewicz” and “Pirkewitz” were used. The village center is a circular hamlet that has expanded considerably over the centuries . Around him was a corridor which in 1900 had an area of ​​about 269 hectares.
