Kildalton Cross

The Kildalton Cross ( Scottish Gaelic Cros Cill Daltain ) is a Celtic cross on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in the southeast of the island near the settlements of Kintour and Ardmore . The cross is in the cemetery at Kildalton Chapel . It is part of the ensemble of chapel and cemetery, which is classified in the Scottish Monument Lists in Category B. Kildalton Cross is also referred to as the Great Cross to distinguish it from the outside of the cemetery Kildalton Small Cross , which is also classified as a Category B monument.

Kildalton Cross had sloped over the centuries. In order to counteract any possible damage to the cross, it was removed in 1862. A second, small cross was uncovered under the foundation. In addition, the remains of a man and a woman who probably died unnaturally were found underneath. A cast of the cross was made and is on display in the National Museums of Scotland . Finally, the foundation was restored and the cross erected again.

description

The 2.65 m high cross with its 1.32 m long crossbeam is made from a piece of locally occurring stone. The front is decorated with typical ornaments such as snakes, dragons and birds. On the reverse, however, biblical scenes are depicted, including the battle of David with the lion, Abraham's preparations for the sacrifice of Isaac , Cain's murder of Abel, and Mary with the child and angels. The Kildalton Cross is of the same design as the crosses on Iona and probably also dates from the second half of the eighth century.
