The Gothic building has an inner area of 17 × 6 m 2 , which is surrounded by one meter thick walls. history

The exact age of the church is not known. Since Kildalton Cross and other parts of the complex are dated to the 8th century, it can be assumed that the place has been used as a religious site at least since then. The church building itself, however, is certainly more recent and its construction is scheduled for the 12th – 13th centuries. Century. The oldest written evidence is from 1425. From the end of the 13th century, the Lords of the Isles used the church. After the Reformation it was used as the parish church of Kildalton parish , which occupied the southeast of the island from McArthur's Head to The Oa . As a result of a shift in settlement density, the church was abandoned at the end of the 18th century and services were held in the building near Lagavulin , which was built in 1730 .
