Life

Abbot Kilian Werlein came from Bamberg and therefore received the St. Lambrecht after his entry into the Styrian monastery . Kilian as patron. Elected abbot in 1725, he proved to be a great patron of the arts and builder who initiated the expansion of the monastery building towards the market. The most important building from this period is the baroque guest wing called the New Prelature , the construction of which began in 1730 under the direction of the builder Fidelis Hainzel and the shell of which was completed in 1735. Abbot Kilian tackled the interior design himself, but had to leave the fine-tuning to his successor, Eugen Inzaghi . In the basilica of Mariazell he had the altar of grace made in silver and the baroque pulpit built into the collegiate church.

A handwritten pen chronicle and several historical works still testify to Abbot Kilian's high education. He also published the Mariazeller Miracle Books, a directory of the miracles wrought in Mariazell . From 1733 to 1735 he was President of the Salzburg Benedictine University.
