Kill the Poor is a song by the American political punk band Dead Kennedys . It was released as a single with the B-side In-Sight in October 1980 .
description
In a satirical way, the song deals with the increasing poverty in the USA . In the text , Jello Biafra calls for getting rid of the unemployed and the poor with the help of the neutron bomb . The poor are seen as a useless burden on the state because they do not contribute anything to its revenue, but only cause social benefits.
Musically, the song is a faster song that is common in punk rock and consists of simple D, C and A chords.
The song was released in the USA in October 1980 on the band's own label Alternative Tentacles , and in the UK on Cherry Red Records . There the song entered the charts on November 1, 1980, where it was able to stay for three weeks, and reached number 49 in the charts as the top spot.
Pop culture references
The band Pascow mentioned the song in their song Time of Awakening from the album Diene der Party :
“Verse one and that, that's it,
your own room is getting too small.
Second minute and then you know you
'll never be the same again.
The trading cards in the basement,
old posters from the wall,
when your own story
about Kill the Poor found the beginning, its beginning. "
