Killewittchen is an area west of the Eschweiler district of Hastenrath in the eastern Eschweiler city forest with a path of the same name and an excursion restaurant. Celtic cill 'cave' (cf. also Kaule, Kuhle ) is likely to be hidden in the previously unexplained name .

The legend of the mining dwarves

There is a legend of dwarfs in Killewittchen, who are also referred to as "Killewittchen". Kille Wittchen are mining driving dwarfs or spirits as Gnome , goblins , nickel or Klabauter . In their legend, the prehistoric, especially Celtic and Roman mining and the Roman brass production could live on in the Eschweiler area . The killewittchen are described as extremely helpful and active at night. According to legend, before they finally disappeared, they took along mineral resources - probably valuable calcite .

One of these dwarfs can be found in the coat of arms of the local carnival society "KG Eefelkank" .
