Kilmorich Parish Church

The Kilmorich Parish Church , also Cairndow Parish Church , Kilmorich Kirk or Cairndow Kirk , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Cairndow . It is near the head of Loch Fyne, north of the Cowal Peninsula . In 1971 Kilmorich Parish Church was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The construction of a new main church in Parish Kilmorich was promoted by Alexander Campbell of Ardkinglas , sole Heritor of the Parish in the 1800s. By his death in 1810, two drafts were submitted to him, one of which was selected by a committee in Dunoon in 1811. However, it was a few years before negotiations to finance the building with Alexander Campbell's heir, George Callender of Craigforth, and local dealerships were completed. In January 1816 the building contractor Alexander McKindley from Colgrain was finally commissioned with the construction, which was completed in the same year. At the end of the 19th century, a prayer room was added to the building. At this time, further alterations were made and a new pulpit was installed in 1902. Kilmorich Parish Church is used as such to this day.

description

Kilmorich Parish Church has features of neo-Gothic architecture. To the west of the building is a two-story tower with a square base with a side length of 4.9 m. The edges of the tower, plastered and whitewashed using the traditional Harling technique, are decorated with corner stones made of sandstone , of which there is also a decorative band between the two floors. The 15.7 m high tower ends with a platform with a decorated sandstone parapet. Above the entrance doors in the north and south walls of the tower there are lancet windows and above the decorative ribbon twin lancet windows. The front facing west, however, shows two twin lancet windows. All windows are set off with sandstone bezels. On the west side between the windows is a sandstone plate with the inscription DPDNJC for Deo Patri Domini Nostri Jesu Christi and the year of construction in the wall. Beyond the entrance doors, a sandstone-lined vestibule opens , from which a staircase leads to the gallery. In addition, a simple wooden staircase leads up the tower to the single bell. To the east, a simple passage opens into the main room. This has an octagonal floor plan with a diameter of 9.9 m and ends with a slate-covered pyramid roof . A total of four twin lancet windows are built into the outer walls. A prayer room adjoins it in the east.
