Kim Pyŏl-a (* 1969 in Kangnŭng , Kangwon-do ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Kim Pyŏl-a was born in Kangnŭng in 1969. She began her career as a writer in 1993. In the following ten years she did not manage to play a major role on the writing stage. The works that she published during this period, such as B. The pornography of my heart (내 마음 의 포르노 그라피), personal experiences (개인적 체험) and football war (축구 전쟁), lacked a unified and distinctive vision.

Kim's work came into the spotlight in 2005 with the publication of her novel Misil (미실). Before writing Misil , she wrote a book called The Legend of Changhwa and Hongryŏn (장화홍련 전), a rewrite of a premodern novel about two sisters. From then on, Kim became more and more interested in discussing the fate of women in Korean history. Misil represents the culmination of her endeavors to bring female characters from history to life in modern literature. Misil is a woman from Silla , a kingdom that existed on the Korean peninsula about a thousand years ago. She is a prototypical femme fatale who is gaining political power because of her love affairs with kings and heroes. Kim was awarded the Segye Literature Prize for redesigning Misil. This award was endowed with 1 billion Korean won, the highest sum that an author has ever received for a single work. With this award, Kims stepped into the limelight of the Korean literary scene.

After the success of Misil , Kim published Farewell Forever and Forever, Farewell Forever (영영 이별 영이별), which depicts the fate of Princess Chŏngsun, wife of the ill-fated King Tanjong, who ascended the throne at the age of twelve was murdered out of his uncle's power calculation. Her more recent publications include Non'gae (논개), which is about a nineteen-year-old courtesan who hugged a Japanese general during the Imjin invasions in order to throw herself off a cliff into the sea with him.

Since Misil , Kim has conducted extensive research to uncover the lives of historical women. By describing the individual fates of personalities in tragic social circumstances, Kim creates her own constant literary world.
