Kim Yeong-hyeon (born February 3, 1955 in Ch'angnyŏng , Kyŏngsangnam-do ) is a South Korean writer , poet and publisher .

Life

Kim Yeong-hyeon was born on February 3, 1955 in Ch'angnyŏng, Kyŏngsangnam-do . He is a writer, poet and publisher for the Silch'ŏn Munhak (실천 문학사) publishing house . Despite his diverse literary activities, his goal is clear and unambiguous: to record the period he had to go through and to write about the things and people he loved and yet had to see it disappear.

The seventies and eighties were a period of suffering and pain for all principled and observant intellectuals in Korean society. Like many others, Kim was a victim of oppression during the thirty years of dictatorship in Korea. He was still at university when he was arrested in 1977 for participating in the student movement. After two years in prison, he was drafted straight into the army upon his release. It was only with the end of the eighties and the entry into the first phase of democratization that Kim and other authors were able to publish the so-called afterthoughts that brought to light the atrocities of the military dictatorship. His first collection of short stories, entitled A Deep River Flows Into the Distance (깊은 강 은 멀리 흐른다), is a product of his painful experiences at the time. Although the general public's interest in the 'afterthought' has waned over the years, Kim continued to write about people who suffered and struggled under political oppression and those who died in it.

His books are evidence of his tenacious preoccupation with the events of modern Korean history. Kim is an artist who acts as the voice of people who have been victims of historical circumstances, and he believes that literature arises in reality, has its roots there and only as such has the ability to heal wounded souls.
