Kimbolton Castle is a former manor house in Cambridgeshire . It became known as the last residence of Catherine of Aragon , the first wife of Henry VIII.

The original medieval castle was converted into a prestigious residence and served as the family seat of the Earls and Dukes of Manchester from 1615 to 1950 . Today it houses the Kimbolton School .

history

The beginnings of the plant go back to Norman times. Under Johann Ohneland , Geoffrey Fitz Peter, 1st Earl of Essex , received the market rights for Kimbolton. As a result, the still existing church was built on site, as well as a manor house in the immediate vicinity of the current mansion, which no longer exists.

The property changed hands several times until 1520 when the Wingfild family carried out a Tudor-style renovation . In April 1534, Catherine of Aragon was exiled to Kimbolton for refusing to consent to the annulment of her marriage due to childlessness. Katharina died just two years later, she was buried in Peterborough Cathedral. In 1615, Sir Henry Montagu, who later became the Earl of Manchester, bought the property, which his descendants lived in for a total of 335 years before it was sold in 1951.

During the Second World War, the house was used as a hospital by the British Army . After changing hands in 1950, Kimbolton Castle was converted into a school. The historical inventory was scattered, some objects found their way into English museums. There are representative rooms with the wall paintings by Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini and a number of portraits that can be viewed.
