The Children's Fund Third World e. V. is a non-profit association founded in 1975 with headquarters in Hamburg .

The aim of the association is to help children and young people in their home countries in the areas of health, school and vocational training to embark on a self-determined life.

history

The organization was founded in 1975 by Stern (Journal) - reporter Randy Braumann and former Honorary Consul of the Republic of Mali Hans-Georg Graichen founded.

What began in 1978 with a cross-border polio vaccination campaign in Mali and Senegal has now become structural help for self-help. The aid organization accompanies and supports projects in Africa , Asia and South America that have grown over the years in the traditional cultural context - and that benefit this context directly. In this way, sustainable contributions can be made to the health, care and education of children and young people in the Third World. Long-term cooperation with shop stewards ensures that people's daily needs are not lost sight of and that the project structures remain transparent. The organization jointly manages the development and implementation of the projects, holds talks with the authorities and monitors the respective measures.

aims

The goals are:

  • the promotion and nationwide expansion of medical care in rural areas of the Republic of Mali through the construction of health centers and vaccination stations as well as social counseling facilities for pregnant women and young mothers;
  • the structural expansion of educational offers in disadvantaged regions of the world through the construction, equipping and educational support of primary schools (Mali, Nepal );
  • Emergency aid for healthy and physically disabled children, orphans and street children by strengthening locally established care facilities and integration programs, etc. a. in Santhigiri ( India ), Mali's capital Bamako and in Musasa Ruli ( Rwanda );
  • the school education, social integration and professional qualification of the blind and visually impaired in Mali, etc. a. through the support of the integrative boarding school UMAV. in Bamako, which leads blind and sighted students in mixed classes to a state school leaving certificate;
  • the foundation for intercultural exchange by involving German students in educational and social development projects with practical assignments lasting several weeks in the project area;
  • the qualification of the unemployed in Germany through integration in specific projects, e.g. B. the collection and repair of medical donations or the development of didactic material for science lessons in the project schools.

Projects

The children's aid organization operates and supports 35 projects to increase the life security of children and young people. The most important are

  • Over a dozen health centers in all parts of southern Mali with maternity and medical wards, mother and child care, advice centers for pre- and post-natal care, nutrition, sex education and family planning;
  • Around 20 primary schools in Mali and Nepal;
  • Around a dozen care projects for socially and / or health impaired children and young people in Argentina, Uruguay, Mali, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka and India. For the soccer World Cup in Brazil in 2014 , the organization put together five projects worthy of funding, which were incorporated into the film documentation series Beyond Maracana .

Finances

In 2019, the Children's Fund received donations and other allowances of € 756,592 (2018: € 680,257). For project work in accordance with the statutes, € 607,966 (2018: € 549,269) was invested, which will benefit around 4,000 children and young people and their families. This corresponds to a share of 90%. The Children's Fund Third World e. V. has an administration and information expenditure of 4%. 5% was spent on general public relations, donor information and advertising. The association is entitled to use the DZI - donation seal to wear ( German Central Institute for Social Issues ) and is a member of the Civil Society Initiative Transparent .

Board

The organization is led by three people:

  • The 1st chairman Uwe Schmidt works full-time in public relations.
  • Hauke ​​Nagel is a high school teacher.
  • Anna-Lena Schildt is also active in public relations.
